About Us

The Raggedy Britches store and website is owned and operated by Myra Joann Carroll (the picture on the left) and my sister Marna Coulter (the picture on the right).

I think that our love of crafts probably came from our Mom who when I was a little girl she was always making a quilt or something to wear for one of her eight children. Mom is still alive and kicking today although she says that she is not able to kick as high as she used to. I am not sure how old she is, and she sure won't tell, but each time there is a new addition to her incredibly large family she gets started on a new baby quilt.

I made my first doll when I was about 12 years old for my little sister Audrey. I wanted to give her a present, and did not have any money to buy one so one day I was looking through a McCall's magazine and found a set of twin rag dolls that I thought were just the cutest things that I had ever seen so I begged Mom for enough quilt scraps and a few sewing lessons on her old sewing machine to make them. The dolls turned out really well, and Audrey loved getting them just as much as I enjoyed making them. That was over 40 years ago, and I am still making dolls today.

I discovered the primitive type of dolls three years ago when I answered an ad in the Knoxville Sunday Paper to sew doll bodies for a primitive doll shop owner here in town. The lady gave me the job the day that I applied to her, and I took doll body pieces home that same day to sew together for her along with a sample doll to go by. My family thought that this doll was the ugliest doll that they had ever seen, but something about these dolls just really appealed to me. The other doll shop owner did not stay in business very long after I started sewing for her, and when she decided to close her shop she sold all her supplies and patterns to me, and I have been making this type of doll ever since. Marna joined me in making the dolls a short time later, and we are now beginning to design our own doll patterns.
